In 2023 Århus Baseball Softball Klub introduced a new sport into the club: Baseball5. Baseball5 (B5) is a fun, fast paced, simplified version of Baseball and Softball. It was originally invented as a street version of baseball, but is now branded as something you can #playeverywhere. The major differences in Baseball5 are: No batting, no pitching and no home runs.

What is baseball5?

Baseball5 offers a highly intense, fast and extremely fun version of Baseball that has a low barrier of entry in terms of equipment, facility, number of players and in some sense also skill.

Equipment & Facilities

To play baseball5 you really only need a ball. The WBSC uses the slogan “All you need is a ball” and in some extend it is true: To play a game of baseball5 you can improvise on how to setup the “field”; could be marked with chalk, tape, objects laid out on the ground to mark bases and foul lines or other creative ways with whatever you have around. You only need a ball, and that ball can be anything from a tennisball, squashball, racquetball and even bigger balls can be used if that’s all you have. There is of course an official baseball5 ball that is used in official games

Number of players

To play a game of Baseball5 you only need two teams of 5 players. That makes Baseball5 mor accesable to play than the traditional games of baseball & softball - where you would need at least 18 people to have a real game going. In ÅBSK we have also practiced Baseball5 with teams of 4. playing 4 vs. 4 makes it a lot harder, but it is not impossible.

Skills

By low barrier of entry in terms of skills we are reffering to the fact that you don’t need a pitcher who has practiced since they were nine to be able to play against the best. In fact, you don’t need a pitcher at all. The skills needed are mainly general fielding, base running, speed and a strategic edge.
